In 2007 the old part of Corfu Town was listed in UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites, because of its unique beauty, architecture and notable history.

Corfu is an excellent example of port fotification engineering designed by the renowned Venetian architect Michele Sanmicheli (1484-1559). The forts were used by the Venetian Empire to protect the maritime trading against the Ottoman Empire and protect the island against the invasion of Ottomans, so they also proved their importance in practical warfare.

The old part of Corfu Town is influenced by Venetian architecture with neoclassical buildings and unique narrow streets called 'Cantouni'. You will notice the medieval beauty of Corfu Town when you get lost in it during your stroll.

(Don't worry though, we also get lost, and we are loving it!)

The responsibility for the protection of Corfu Town is shared by several institutions.

The Hellenic Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of the Environment, Spatial Planning and Public Works, the Municipality of Corfu and the 21st Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquites.

The old part of Corfu Town is also protected by the Greek law about the shoreline of towns and islands and the law about the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage.

'As a fortified Mediterranean port, Corfu's urban and port ensemble constitutes an architectural example of outstanding universal value for its high level of integrity and authenticity' - UNESCO
